Co-op in Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School

Solo, online for two, couch co-op, or No-Timer Mode.

You can enroll alone or with one classmate. Steam categories cover single-player, online co-op, and shared or split-screen co-op, plus play without timed input. Xbox states the co-op headcount. PlayStation states a 1 to 2 player range. Optional No-Timer Mode is the pace switch, separate from those headcounts.

Who can sit in the session

01Single-player

One student can clear the campus without a second controller.

02Online co-op

A classmate joins over the network. Xbox calls that online co-op for two players.

03Shared or split screen

Couch co-op uses one machine. Steam tags both shared screen and split screen.

04No-Timer Mode

Timed input can be switched off so the room runs at a preferred pace.

Steam's category list names the modes and does not print a number of players next to them. The categories that matter for a session are Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op, Online Co-op, Shared/Split Screen Co-op, Shared/Split Screen, Playable without Timed Input, and Remote Play Together. Full controller support, DualShock, and DualSense are separate tags for the hardware, not a third headcount.

Xbox is the page that states two players, for both local co-op and online co-op. PlayStation's US concept page lists the PS5 release for 1 to 2 players, dated 5 November 2026. iam8bit Presents lists the same calendar day on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox, and describes the game as solo or co-op with No-Timer Mode. The short Steam description also offers solo or co-op before the bell.

Online and splitscreen couch co-op are both in the store description. Grab a classmate is the couch case: one machine, shared picture or a split picture. The network case is the other student joining from their own screen. Remote Play Together is an additional Steam category for sharing a session. It does not replace the Xbox two-player line or the PlayStation 1 to 2 range.

Do not read a room-by-room co-op map out of these lines. They say who can be in the session and whether the timer has to run. They do not assign a partner to Science Campus, a gate, or a story class. Curriculum order and Extra Credit order stay the same whichever way you enroll.

Pace, separate from the player cap

No-Timer Mode is optional. With it on, timed input is off and the puzzles stay. The store description ties that switch to preferred pace, including students who do not want a clock on the inputs. The matching Steam category is Playable without Timed Input. Turning the timer off does not, by itself, tell you whether the session is one player or two. Read the player count from Xbox or PlayStation, and read the timer from this switch.

A single-player session can use the timer or No-Timer Mode. An online pair on Xbox is still two players if the timer is off. A couch pair is still the local co-op case if the timer is off. The ledger keeps those as separate rows so the pace note is not buried inside the player-count note.

If you are choosing before you buy, the practical split is this. Play alone on any of the three platforms. Add one classmate online, which Xbox caps at two and PlayStation places inside 1 to 2. Or share a screen at the couch, which Steam tags as shared or split, and which Xbox also calls two-player local co-op. Then decide whether the inputs are timed. The 5 November 2026 release date is the same day on the publisher page and on the PlayStation date.
